Can you keep a secret? Pinky promise?
I like to snack. Like a lot. I actually think snacking is my favourite hobby. I mean after writing this blog, of course.
So, from the self designated queen of snacking, I’m going to share one of my best kept secrets with you all. These are the best vegan french fries. Ever. Period. That’s all. The End.
Okay, have a great day!
Oh good, you stuck around! I almost forgot to give you the secret recipe to this all time best snack ever. Don’t worry though, I’m not going to leave you hanging.
Keeping up with our Super Easy Sunday posts, I thought this amazing recipe for the best vegan french fries was only appropriate. Cause I mean, who doesn’t like snacking? If you’re one of those few people who actually doesn’t like snacking, you should probably just stop reading now. I have a suspicion that I had you at french fries though, didn’t I? 😉
These french fries are incredibly easy to make, require no unusual preparation, are crispy, crunchy and perfect for dunking in all sorts of dips or topping with with favourite french fry toppers. Vegan Poutine? Salsa and guacamole? You get the idea 🙂
One of these things that truly makes these the best vegan french fries is the fact that you can spice them up to your heart’s content. My personal favourite is sea salt and fresh ground peppercorns but you could sprinkle these with rosemary and garlic, cajun spice, garam masala, or even a little cinnamon sugar if you really wanted to get all up and crazy with these fries. Can you tell we like to experiment in the kitchen?
But seriously guys, you need to make these. If you’re one of those people who doesn’t make their own french fries due to the fact that you think it takes too long or that there’s too much prep work involved, these fries are going to change your life. I mean, they’re called the best vegan french fries for a reason!
Now I need to give credit where credit is due – my husband came up with this recipe. Yes, friends – in addition to being the king of soup, he is also the king of the best vegan french fries. I really need to get around to buying him a crown one of these days.
We use Yukon Gold Potatoes to make the best vegan french fries but regular white potatoes would work just as well.
The success of these french fries lies in two very important steps: 1. Cutting the fries into thick matchsticks, approximately 1/4″ x 1/4″ and 2. Not overloading the baking tray. As long as you stick to these two steps, the best vegan french can be yours to enjoy in just 30 short minutes! And, you don’t even need to worry about flipping or rotating these while they bake – yay for super easy Sundays!!
So not only are you going to end up with a plate full of these amazing french fries in an excitingly short amount of time, but in the time that these yummy snacks are baking, you can get all sorts of fun extra-curriculars completed too. You can do some yoga, plan some other snacks, eat some of that awesome cheesecake you made earlier in the week or even start your own food blog. The opportunities are limitless!
So make me one last promise before we part ways today?
Promise me that you will make the best vegan french fries for yourself. I know you’ll love them and, if you’re anything like me, find all sorts of excuses to eat them for every meal. Beck was an absolute gem to work with and I would highly recommend her to any one who might be looking for some design work for their own blog. - 3 medium Yukon Gold Potatoes
- Olive Oil
- Sea Salt to taste
- Fresh Black Pepper to taste
- Preheat oven to 425F
- Ensure your potatoes are cleaned and rinsed
- Leaving the skins on the potatoes, chop into thick matchsticks, approximately ¼" by ¼" thick.
- Spread chopped potatoes onto a parchment lined cookie tray, ensuring that none of the potatoes are overlapping each other. Make sure to not overload your tray. For three potatoes, you will most likely need to cook them in two batches, depending on the size of your cookie trays.
- Using an oil mister or spray oil, mist the chopped potatoes with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and fresh ground black pepper.
- Bake for 25 minutes, until golden brown and crispy,
- Enjoy the best vegan french fries as is or dip into your favourite ketchup, vegan gravy or sriacha vegan mayonnaise.
Why do we need to specify that *these* fries in particular are gluten free and vegan? Unless you’re coating your fries in flour and deep frying them in butter all fries qualify as vegan gluten free.
What do you do if you don’t have parchment paper? To line the cookie sheet?
You could try using a silicone baking mat. I’m not sure if they will turn out as crispy though. The parchment paper is really the key to making this recipe.
Hey Savanna!
I just discoveres your blog today and I’ve already fallen in love. Can’t wait to try out this recipe. I was just wondering, did I miss something or are we really leaving the potatoe skin on for the whole process? I’ve never done that before and I’m wondering if I’m just not getting something right here..
Yes, definitely leave the skins on! You’ll love them, I promise!!
I’m new to cooking – why not overload a tray?
Does it have to do with potatoe sticks touching? Or is there something else that I’m missing?
Hi Patrick,
You’re absolutely correct – it definitely has to do with the potato sticks touching. If they touch, they won’t get as crispy and delicious. I hope you enjoy the recipe!
I am going to make these tonight with some veggie burgers! Can’t wait to try these out-thank you for sharing! 🙂 PS. Do you have a special ratio for the sriracha ketchup?? YUM!
Hi Kelly,
I’m so excited for you to have these tonight! My husband and I like things spicy so we usually do 1/2 ketchup 1/2 sriracha so I guess it just depends on how much spice you like 😉 Enjoy!!
Homemade fries are the best! Beautiful photos!
Agreed! Thanks, Karissa! I’m loving all the comment love, by the way! 🙂
We love french fries around here too and I can definitely agree that not overloading the tray is a super important trick. Your fries look pretty awesome {as is your new site design! 😉 }.
Thanks, Audrey! I adore my new logo so I’m so happy to hear that you like it! 🙂
Nothing beats home made french fries.. and after seeing this post you’ve got me craving a bowlful to devour!
